Additional Course Costs (NOT Included in Tuition):

Background Check and Immunization Tracker = $70

Drug Screen = $20 Not Required, but student may choose to do one to do rideouts with an EMS service that requires it.

Immunizations = Cost Varies Dependent on Immunization Needs and Healthcare Provider

Clinical Internship Uniform = Varies-Average $60-$100

After the Course:

NREMT EMT-Basic Exam Fee= $70 (For Each Exam Attempt)

TDSHS EMT-Basic Certification Fee= $64

TDSHS Criminal History Check= $44.20 (First Time Applicants Only for TDSHS)

Course Prerequisites:

Be at least 17 years of age.

It is recommended that all students be able to read, write, and comprehend at the eleventh grade reading level.

Certification Requirements:

18 Years of Age or Older

Course Contact Hours:

Classroom (Didactic and Skills)= 172 hours

Clinical Internships (EMS and ED)= 72 hours

Total Course Hours= 244 hours

*Clinical Internship hours are completed outside the normal class meeting times and scheduled on an individual basis by each student.

Requirements for Clinical Internships:

Pass Criminal History Background Check (Additional Cost)

Clinical Internship Insurance (Included with Tuition)

Current CPR Course Completion Card (Provided in Course and Included in Tuition)

Provide Proof of Current Immunizations as follows (Immunization Tracker - Additional Cost):

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

Varicella (Chickenpox) By Immunization or Exposure

Tetanus in Previous 10 Years


Hepatitis B

PPD (TB Skin Test) in Previous 12 Months (Negative Chest X-Ray in Previous 12 Months for Positive Skin Test)

Current Flu Vaccine for classes occuring between September through May

NOTE ON IMMUNIZATIONS: Proof of immunizations is NOT needed to register or attend the course only to schedule and attend clinical internships. More is discussed regarding immunization requirements on the first day of class. Generally clincial internships begin in week three of day course and week six of night/weekend course.

Course Description:

Preparation for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Basic. Includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an emergency service or other specialized services. Upon completion of this course, the student will apply safety and operational principles in out-of-hospital environments; demonstrate life saving care to patients at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level; and display professional and ethical behaviors expected of emergency personnel. This course has both a didactic and clinical internship component.

EMT-Basic is the entry level course for a career in EMS in the State of Texas. This course is also required for any person considering completion of an EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic Course.
